Craziest Week!! – Susquehanna #11

Hello friends and family!!

Wow. This week has been the craziest week! I know I say that every week, but I really mean it this time!! SO many of our appointments fell through, it was so sad!! But on Wednesday we went on exchanges with our sister training leaders!! Sister Johnstone and I went to Tunkhannock and Sister Brown stayed in Susquehanna with Sister Nielson! I LOVE Sister Johnstone!!! It was just like old times, my first transfer in the ppm (: it was seriously so fun to go on exchanges with my trainer!! We literally didn’t have a quiet moment. I just love her so much!!

This week was super stressful and everyone kept asking us things about the visitors center and about everything that’s going to be happening up here and we didn’t have any answers so I was super stressed out! Our district leader had been in Montrose for the afternoon so we called him to ask if he was still in Montrose and if he was if he could give me a blessing. So we call him and he’s all, “I’m actually in Great Bend right now, where can I meet you?” Ah I was seriously so grateful that he was so much closer and it wasn’t out of his way to come here! So we’re trying to think of somewhere he can meet us and Sister Brown is all, “Meet us at the Susquehanna river.” So we drive down to the river and Elder Moriera gave me a blessing at the river in the pouring rain. I love the priesthood. I love it so much, and I’m so grateful for it! I felt so peaceful after that and despite the fact that we still had no idea what was going on I knew that Heavenly Father had it all under control and I didn’t need to worry about it! (:

On Friday morning we went and did service at the restoration site and pulled weeds. It was actually so much fun to get to talk with everyone there (Sisters Simmons, Francis, and Elder and Sister Lingman (senior couple) were all there), We barely had any time to do our weekly planning because we had so many people to see! It was crazy.

On Sunday we went to church and during Sunday School we went to the Branch President’s office with the D…s’ and the Richardson’s (other senior couple) and worked on their family history for names to take to the temple for baptisms! Then during the third hour the D…s’ had their temple recommend interview and throughout all of relief society I am wondering about the D…s’ and how it’s going for them. Then finally, K… walks in and sits on the opposite end of the room from me so I mouth to her, “How did it go??” And in response she holds up her temple recommend!! I seriously almost started crying tears of joy!! I am SO excited for them!!!!!! We are still trying to figure the details out with the temple, because we were supposed to go this Saturday, but another surprise! The visitor’s center actually opens this Saturday!! So we don’t know if we can go to the temple with them or not…. We’re figuring out the details with the visitor’s center director. Needless to say, either way I am SO happy they got their temple recommends!! It has been a long time coming, and I cannot wait for them to go to the temple to do baptisms!!

So after church Sister Brown and I went to our appointments, and one of them fell through, so we were just going to do finding up in the area we were in.. But right after the appointment fell through the Assistants called us and asked us if we would be at our apartment at 3:30 because they had all of the other visitor center sisters with them. We look at the time and it’s already 3:10 and we were a half hour away so we get home at about 3:40 and wait for them all to show up. We sat on our landlord’s porch and talked to her as we waited… and waited… and waited! So 4:10 rolls around and we call the assistants and ask them where they are!! And they say, “Sisters, we are so sorry! We’ve been at the restoration site for the past 40 minutes, we’ll be to your apartment soon!” So we go back in our house to go to the bathroom and as we’re getting ready to go back out President Anderson calls us and tells us that I’m going to be moving out of the house I’m in and Sister Brown will be staying there with three other sisters who have been in the mission for about 5 weeks. And I am going to be training one of the GOLDENS who just got here from the mtc on Saturday!!!! YAY!! So about 15 minutes later, Sister Anderson, President, the Assistants, and 8 sister missionaries show up!!! We all go into our tiny house and drop off luggage and President comes up to me and says, “Sister Gomm, this is Sister Larsen, she just got here yesterday, and she is your new companion.” Oh my goodness. I LOVE Sister Larsen!!! She is the BEST!!!!!!!! She really is golden!! So we are part time visitor’s center missionaries and the rest of the time we will be proselyting!

So we all walk over to the Biesinger’s (senior couple) house and had dinner with all 12 visitor center sisters, 10 senior missionaries, President and Sister Anderson and the Assistants. Can you say too many missionaries in one house?? It was insane.

So we still don’t know what’s going on really, we just know that we are starting visitor’s center training tonight!!!!!!! I am so excited and I love being a missionary! I’m sorry this is so long and everywhere, but I hope you all have an amazing week!! I love you to the moon and back!!

Love,

Sister Gomm (:

Hello friends and family!

Wow. What a crazy week. Almost every single appointment that we had fell through! It was so sad! We did have a lesson with the D… family this week though and it went SO well!! We taught the word of wisdom as part of their reteaching, and wow. I just love the D… family SO much!! They are the best!!

We are trying to build our teaching pool so we’ve been doing A LOT of finding! I think we’re going to knock on every single door in this area by the time I leave here!! It’s so fun though, everyone here is so amazing!!

This upcoming week the rest of the visitors center missionaries are supposed to be coming up here. They’ve had them in trios throughout the mission and they’re bringing them all up here so we can start our training for the visitors center next week! It’s going to be exciting! Really no one knows what’s going on still and all of our branch members keep asking us what’s going to happen but none of us know! I’m excited to find out though!

Last Monday we had family home evening at our branch mission leaders house with a less active member that the great bend sisters are actually teaching, but it was SO fun!! They have the funniest traditions for fhe! It was the best!

This week Sister Brown and I were looking over our notes that we had taken from the mtc. It was so cool to re-read all of those things that I had written down then. I have learned so much from them, it’s crazy! One thing that was clearly talked about a lot was that we need to talk to everyone. And that is the truth! It’s so important to talk to everyone because you never know who is ready to hear about the gospel!! Sister Brown and I are really working on that this week!!

I’m sorry this is so short, but just know that I know that this church is true! I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t. I love this gospel so much, it’s so important to live it in every part of our lives. I truly am so grateful for it. The Book of Mormon is true. It’s such an amazing book. If you haven’t read it, READ IT!!! Seriously. It will change your life for the better. I promise.

I love you to the moon and back!!

Love,

Sister Gomm (:

Hello friends and family!! First of all I just want to say congratulations to my baby sister on making the varsity soccer team!! Whoo! I know none of us are surprised, but I’m so proud of you! And congratulations to Tara R…!! My mom sent me a picture, you look absolutely stunning!!

Wow. What a rough week here in Susquehanna. Our new investigator that I talked about last week, F…, dropped us because she had some things come up and she doesn’t feel ready for the gospel. I am so sad about her! It’s crazy, everyone keeps dropping us. It’s devastating, really.

On a better note, the D… family is doing amazing!! They are so excited to go to the temple to do baptisms at the end of the month! I just love them so so so much! The S… family, (they were baptized about a year ago) decided that they wanted to do something that would help them progress in the gospel, and they asked us if we would have family home evening at their house so that we could help them know what to do for fhe. It was so fun and we talked about gratitude and I know that they all felt closer as a family afterwards and that they will continue to grow closer!

Sister Gomm & Sister Johnstone

Another plus, we had zone training in Scranton this week and I don’t think I mentioned this before, but Sister Johnstone is one of my sister training leaders! So I got to see her! Also Elder Beckstead who was in my mtc district is in my zone now, so that was exciting to see him!

We met this family that we taught the restoration to and they invited us to come back this upcoming Saturday! I am excited to really start teaching them and helping them! It’s crazy because our investigators keep dropping us, but we are still seeing miracles and meeting so many amazing people!! I just love Susquehanna so much!

Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Site - New church building and visitor's center.

Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Site – New church building and visitor’s center.

Other exciting news that I actually found out a couple of weeks ago but never mentioned, I am going to be in the visitor’s center up here!!! It will be finished in September, but we have training that will start at the end of this month! No one really knows what’s going on still, and we are just telling everyone about it and inviting them all to come! A lot of people in the area are super excited to go and see everything when it’s done!

Youth Conference stop at the Susquehanna River.

Youth Conference stop at the Susquehanna River.

On Saturday we had a devotional with a stake that came here for youth conference! Our branch president gave their stake president our phone number and he called us a few days before and asked if we could talk about what happened at the Susquehanna River and talk a little bit about personal revelation because that was the theme for their youth conference. So Saturday morning we headed down to the river a little bit early and talked to some people who were down there who had been at the Palmyra temple the day before (funny because the youth conference group had also been there the day before), and waited for the youth group to get there. Once they all started coming down they ran right to the river and were all yelling and skipping rocks and splashing in the river. The leaders gathered everyone around and Sister Brown and I started talking about everything that happened there and how Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were baptized and received the Aaronic Priesthood there. The spirit was so strong and I could tell as I testified that the spirit was touching the hearts of the youth there. Afterwards we headed up to the cemetery and showed them Elizabeth and Isaac Hale’s graves and Emma and Joseph’s child’s grave. As we were leaving the river everyone was so respectful and reverent. It was so cool to see the difference from when they had arrived to when they left. The spirit was so strong and I’m so glad I could meet so many amazing people!

I love the people here so much, and I love being a missionary and I love Susquehanna! Even though almost all of our appointments fell through this week and we are struggling to find people I’ve never been happier in my entire life! The gospel brings so much joy! I was reading in Luke chapter 1 this morning and I love verses 46 and 47. In this chapter Mary finds out that she will be the mother of the Son of God. From the moment she finds this out she doesn’t question it. She has so much faith and in verses 46 and 47 she says, “My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.” I want to be like that. I want everything I do to magnify the Lord. I want people who know me to know my Savior because of what I do and how I act. I love this gospel, I’m so grateful for it! Mary is such a wonderful example to me of faith and diligence. She submits to God’s will and I’m so grateful for her example.

I hope you all have a great week! I love you to the moon and back!!

Sister Sammy Gomm (:

6 months! – Susquehanna #8

Hello everyone!!

This is going to be short, sorry!!

But wow! What a crazy week! Being a missionary is so hard but so rewarding!! We had so many appointments fall through and so many uninterested people, but we’ve also seen so many miracles this week!

Also, side note, I’ve officially been in the ppm for 6 months!!!!

We met the most amazing lady named F… this week. Wow. She is the best! We found her while tracking a street a few streets up from our house and we started talking and she had so many questions and such a desire to know more! We went over a few days later and taught the restoration and she LOVED it!! She told us some miracle stories that have happened in her life and how she knows God answers prayers. She also accepted the invitation to be baptized!!!! I am so so so excited for her!! The only problem is that I wasn’t thinking and the date we set is actually the day that the priesthood restoration site is being dedicated! Oops! So we are going to move the date up a week. She is so amazing, I just love her so so much! Everything we tell her she thinks is so cool and she repeatedly says that it sounds like the truth! I love her(:

So last week our mission president suggested that we call an elder who had been serving in our area before us to ask him how we could help this family that was recently baptized who haven’t been coming to church very much and who haven’t gone to the temple to do baptisms for the dead yet. So we call Elder Mackay and he was so surprised to hear us on the phone. He gave us some great advice on how to help this family and he told us that the thing that worked best for them was to just stop by their house randomly and meet with them there (the family likes to meet at the church usually); which would be awesome except for the fact that they just (temporarily) moved one street outside of our branch…. And one street outside of our mission boundaries. ONE!! So we decide to try and meet this family at the church one more time before we try and figure out what to do. Well, Thursday rolls around and our appointment fell through! It was devastating for me! I wanted to meet with them SO badly!! So Sister Brown and I thought about it and discussed it and even prayed about it, and we both came to the conclusion that we needed to call President Anderson and ask him if we could go out of our mission boundaries and meet with them. The family is planning on moving back into our branch soon so they are just going to keep coming here in the mean time. So we call President Anderson and he answers but once we said we just had a question for him he asked if he could call us back later. So all night we’re hoping he will return our call but he never did! So the next morning we texted him and told him to call us if he gets a chance. Right after we send that he calls us! Whoo! So I explain the situation to President and he’s all, “Well Sister Gomm, if it was 20 miles outside of the mission boundaries I would say no way, but if it’s only a street or two I’d say you’d be stupid not to go.” Hahaha!! Oh I love President Anderson!! So we FINALLY got to meet with T… and K…!! It was funny because the senior missionary couple that came to the lesson with us (and drove us) made a bigger deal about us leaving the mission boundaries than we did. Too funny! But T… and K… are the BEST!!!!! We are preparing them to go to the temple on August 29!!! I love them so much and I am so excited for them to go!!

I just love this gospel so much! And I’m so grateful that I get to help people know about it!!

I’m sorry, but that is all I have time for!! I love you all to the moon and back!

Love,
Sister Sammy Gomm (:
