I love being a missionary! – Bethlehem #15

Hello friends and family!

We had an amazing week! We had multiple lessons with B…, our
“phone call miracle” investigator. All of which were such spiritual
experiences for her and us! She is so golden. She came to church
yesterday and LOVED it! She was participating so much, she even
suggested everyone introduce themselves in gospel principles (which
was perfect because half of them were there for the first time!), when
she introduced herself she said, “Hi, I’m B…, and I want to be
baptized.” I couldn’t help but laugh and ask myself for the 100th time
if I was dreaming.

On Wednesday we went on exchanges with the south side sisters!! Sister
Ashcraft came here to north side with me and Sister Brunsdale went to
south side with Sister Jensen. Wow. Sister Ashcraft and I were a
companionship made in heaven, but not really because we were only
companions for one day. We had SO much fun! We are basically the same
person. She is the cutest. We had dinner with a family of members
which was both of our first times going there for dinner, I don’t
think they even realized that we were on exchanges, but we taught them
the restoration and it was amazing! The Spirit was SO strong!

On Thursday we had zone training that was all about the Book of
Mormon! Yay! One of my favorite things!! It was SO good! I know I need
to use the Book of Mormon more effectively as a missionary and this
was just what I needed to hear! They had us read the talk Safety for
the Soul by Elder Holland before zone training, then hey referenced
back to the talk throughout the meeting. I thought about the district
video where they have part of this talk at the end of one of the
videos. Elder Holland speaks with such boldness. He isn’t afraid to
proclaim to the world that he knows the Book of Mormon is true. I love
the last part of his talk:

I ask that my testimony of the Book of Mormon and all that it
implies, given today under my own oath and office, be recorded by men
on earth and angels in heaven. I hope I have a few years left in my
“last days,” but whether I do or do not, I want it absolutely clear
when I stand before the judgment bar of God that I declared to the
world, in the most straightforward language I could summon, that the
Book of Mormon is true, that it came forth the way Joseph said it came
forth and was given to bring happiness and hope to the faithful in the
travail of the latter days.
My witness echoes that of Nephi, who wrote part of the book in
his “last days”:
“Hearken unto these words and believe in Christ; and if ye
believe not in these words believe in Christ. And if ye shall believe
in Christ ye will believe in these words, for they are the words of
Christ, … and they teach all men that they should do good.
“And if they are not the words of Christ, judge ye–for Christ
will show unto you, with power and great glory, that they are his
words, at the last day.”
Brothers and sisters, God always provides safety for the soul,
and with the Book of Mormon, He has again done that in our time.
Remember this declaration by Jesus Himself: “Whoso treasureth up my
word, shall not be deceived”–and in the last days neither your heart
nor your faith will fail you. Of this I earnestly testify in the name
of Jesus Christ, amen.

I think of all of the prophets who wrote in the Book of Mormon, all
that they went through to make sure we got this. I think of this
dispensation, all that Joseph Smith went through to make sure we got
the Book of Mormon. All that my parents went through to make sure that
I got this Book. Something a missionary had said to me about a year
ago has always stuck with me, “Would Moroni be proud of the testimony
you gave of this marvelous Book? Would he feel that you did it
justice? After your life here on earth, would he say that you had done
enough?” Each time I think of that I think of how thankful I am to
have many opportunities every day to testify that the Book of Mormon
is true. I think of our beloved Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson.
He has used his life to testify to all that the Book of Mormon is
true. That it testifies of Jesus Christ and answers questions of the
soul. It teaches us how to be with our loving Father in Heaven again.
How blessed are we to have such a wonderful servant of the Lord to
direct us and guide us!

Yesterday in sacrament meeting during fast and testimony meeting, a
Brother in the ward bore his testimony on the plan of salvation.
Earlier that week we had taught the plan of salvation to him, his wife
and his daughter at a dinner appointment. While sharing his testimony
in sacrament meeting he mentioned this and talked about how touched he
was that we were teaching his daughter wonderful truths. He got pretty
emotional because the Spirit was so strong. What he forgot to mention
though, was after we taught the whole plan of salvation to his family,
we showed a video about Christ. The Spirit was so strong because their
home was already a Christ-centered place. Their daughter already knew
who Jesus Christ was, and at just three years old had enough knowledge
of our Savior to invite the Spirit to testify of all that He did for
us.

One of our many miracles this week was having three investigators at
church! A few days before Sunday we were pretty stressed out because
we had told our district leader that we were going to be accountable
to 3 at church! We had been inviting everyone, but despite our
efforts, we didn’t think we were going to have three people there.
Saturday night in prayer, I told Heavenly Father I had done all I
could and if it was His will, I would love to have three people at
church, two of which could be people we could begin teaching. The next
morning at church B… walked in and then two people that a member
brought came as well! They all stayed for all three hours and we are
going to start teaching the two that were brought by the member! They
participated so much in class and all have such a great desire to
learn! In gospel principles B… asked us what the topic was
(Sister Brunsdale and I taught because the ward mission leader wasn’t
there). When we told her the topic was obedience she looked kind of
sad and said, “We’re not going to talk about the Book of Mormon?” Wow.
That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard! Luckily we were talking a lot
about Nephi and how obedient and willing he was! I love that B…
loves the Book of Mormon. It’s how we all should be.

I know the Book of Mormon is true. I know the priesthood is on the
earth today. And I know that Jesus is the Christ. I wouldn’t be on a
mission if any of these things weren’t true! I love seeing the gospel
change people, there is no greater work to be a part of! I love being
a missionary!

I hope you have a wonderful week! I love you to the moon and back!

Love,
Sister Gomm

Hello everyone!

Wow. What a crazy week! Sister Larsen and I never seem to have time
for anything, it’s crazy!

One night this week Sister Larsen and I were at the gas station
getting gas for our truck and we always go in and say hello to the
elders quorum president because he works there! So afterwards we go in
to say hello and ask how his day was and everything and there were two
important things that we needed to ask him about. As the conversation
kept going I kept having the thought that we should just leave. I was
very puzzled by this because we hadn’t asked him either of our two
questions yet! Without asking our questions though we said goodbye and
got going. Sister Larsen and I both mentioned how strange it was that
we both had the same thought and walked back to the car. There was a
car on the other side using the other pump and as we got closer I
thought about zone conference earlier that week and how President
Anderson had talked about how we need to talk to everyone. As we got
closer I couldn’t find anyone at the car and opened my door to get in.
Right at the last minute I saw someone and said hello and then
recognized that I knew her! It was one of our long lost investigators
S…! We’ve been trying to get back in contact with her but keep
missing her and the number we had for her wasn’t the right one. So we
start talking to her and ask if we can have her number again. So she
gives us her number and then also gave us her cell phone number too!
She was surprised to see us, especially because she was just getting
gas and going right back home! It was too perfect how the timing all
worked out(; now if we can just talk to the elders quorum president
and ask him our questions……(;

This week was pretty bittersweet. None of our recent converts that
we’ve been working with watched conference this weekend… And so many
of the talks were things I know they needed to hear! But hey, that’s
why we have the Internet and they can look them up later! But we did
have 3 investigators watch at least one session of conference! A…,
a woman Sister Brown and I met awhile ago came! Sister Larsen and I
had had a lesson with her on Thursday and she is the coolest! She
likes to learn about a lot of religions, but doesn’t really know what
she believes. She came to the first session on Sunday. She enjoyed it,
but mentioned that it was “a lot more touchy-feely than I imagined”
hahaha! I guess that’s one way to put that you were feeling the
spirit(; she’s coming to the visitors center later this week for a
tour and we are having another lesson later this week as well, we’ll
see how it goes!!

Something I’ve really come to love on my mission is finding!! I’ve
done a lot of it too! I just love talking to people and getting to
know them and learning a little bit of their story and testifying of
truth to them. Oftentimes you don’t have very much time to talk to
people, so I’ve learned to testify right away. I love sharing what I
know to be true. It’s crazy how fast and simply you can touch the
hearts of others. I’m so grateful for the spirit that helps us when we
are testifying to people. Sister Larsen and I have made it a goal to
not just talk to everyone, but to talk about the gospel with everyone.
We went to a bible study class at the Methodist church and it was so
interesting to hear them talk about what they believe. It made me sad
that none of them felt like they knew they could achieve living in
God’s presence again. That’s why I’m so grateful for our knowledge of
the plan of salvation. That we can know how and what to do to be able
to live with our Heavenly Father again. I’m so grateful for this
gospel!

I love you to the moon and back!

Hello friends and family!!

Wow, it’s been a CRAZY week.

So last Monday we went to a lady named V…’s house. Background on
V…: about 2 weeks ago we were going to stop by a less active
member who Sister Ipson and I had never met before. We get out of the
car and start walking up to the front door and there’s two women
sitting on the front porch. So we start talking, one of them
introduces herself as V… and we ask if W… is there (the less
active member) but V… tells us that W… hasn’t lived there for
about five months now, that they moved in after she had already left.
So we ask V… if she wants to hear a message about Jesus Christ.
She tells us she’s busy but that we can come back on Friday at 3. So
on Friday we go back and V… tells us she has company over but
that we can come back on Monday at 1. Okay great…. If you’re not
interested then just tell us!! So we go back on Monday and we had a
member, Sister K…, come with us. And wow! V… is awesome!! So
we talked to her and got to know her! She has been baptized into three
different churches, but none of them have been fulfilling enough for
her. She told us that the next one she joins is going to be for real!
So we answer her questions which were amazing questions! She asked us
things like do we believe in the trinity, or what we think happens to
us after we die, why we think we need to be baptized, etc. So we
explained things to her and she’s all, “You know, it’s interesting, I
had been praying and asking God which church I should join and then
you girls showed up…” God answers your prayers everyone!! So we left
her with a Restoration pamphlet, a plan of salvation pamphlet, and a
Book of Mormon. I was a little stressed to give her all of those
things in one day, but it felt right!

So we go back on Thursday and we ask her if she was able to read any
of the things we left her. She’s all, “Oh yes! I loved the two
pamphlets, but I only got to read a little bit of the Book of Mormon.”
We’re all, “That’s okay, how much did you read?” I’m thinking you
know, maybe she got to read 3 or 4 verses… “I’m only on chapter 13
of 1 Nephi.” Wait, what? You’ve read 13 chapters of the Book of Mormon
since Monday?? So we told that was awesome and she told us that
reading the Book of Mormon has helped her to be patient. It is so cool
to see people learn about the gospel and come closer to Christ! We’re
meeting with V… again tomorrow, so we are praying that all goes
well!! (:

On Saturday we stopped by a less active member, P…. We pull up and
see that she’s in the back gardening. We go over and she’s all hello
girls!! I have a bunch of lettuce that I’m growing, would you like
some?” We’re all, sure!! So she begins pulling out different kinds of
lettuce for us which is so so so awesome, but she gave us SO MUCH!!!
Needless to say, Sister Ipson and I will be eating salad for the next
two weeks!! Haha!!

This week I’ve been thinking a lot about the plan of salvation. The
fact that God has given us such a simple way to return to live with
Him again. And living our lives here on earth is such an important
part of His plan. We are to live righteously and to help others to do
so as well. Because of Christ we will all be perfected, and we will
all have the opportunity to live with our Father in Heaven again. We
just need to take the steps here to return to Him. Living our lives
righteously is extremely important. What can you do this week to help
others know of the plan of salvation?

I love you all to the moon and back and I hope you have a wonderful week!!
Love,
Sister Sammy Gomm (:

Plan of Salvation Visual Aid Handout

plan of salvation Lots of missionaries have said that it is really helpful to have your own visual aid for the Plan of Salvation. This is so you don’t have to take the time to draw it out every time. I wasn’t sure where to get one of these, so I just made one for her.

I made color copies on cardstock of both pages.

The first page (with the larger images) – we cut out the images and then had them laminated. With a scrap piece of lamination we cut out body shapes and outlined it with a sharpie (this is to represent the spirit).

The second page – this was just cut in half. This is just the layout of the Plan of Salvation.

A free copy of the Plan of Salvation Visual Aids can be found here. This is for personal use only. Please do not copy and share the file. Please direct others to this post, so they may properly receive their own free copy.
