I love to see the Temple – Susquehanna #16

Hello friends and family!!

I don’t have a lot of time or a lot to say this week, it’s been crazy
though! N… made fun of me for always talking about how many of our
appointments always fall through, but it happens every week so I feel
like I need to say it every week!! (; (I loooove you N…!!!)

A miracle that happened this week was at church! We didn’t have anyone
planning on coming to church that we knew of… We had meetings in the
morning and afterwards we walked into the chapel and there was a woman
named R… standing there! Her daughter has been a member for a year,
but R… hasn’t been ready to take the lessons because she wants the
approval of her husband. We went straight over to her and started
talking to her and she told us that her husband has been asking so
many questions ever since their daughter brought them to the
Priesthood Restoration Site. He has also been searching things on
lds.org and he’s been learning a lot from there. They were talking
about it and both of them want to start taking the lessons together!!!
It’s crazy, I know that his heart is being softened by the Lord and
both of them are being prepared to accept the gospel, I am SO excited
to start teaching them!!

We had zone conference yesterday and it was SO good! I just love
talking about the Book of Mormon and the truths it holds!

Today was a special, special day! Sister Johnstone and I went to the
temple today with N…!!! He has been baptized for a year now and
President Anderson gave me permission to go to the temple with them
because Sister Johnstone’s companion when he got baptized is home now.
Wow. The temple is amazing! I love it. We went to the Palmyra temple
and Brother B…, the ward mission leader in Downingtown, was
N…’ escort! It was such a neat experience to be here with N… and
see him make more covenants with Heavenly Father. I’m so so so
grateful for the temple and I love this gospel!

That’s all I have for this week, I love you to the moon and back!

Love,

Sister Gomm (:

Look unto me in every thought; – Susquehanna #13

Friends and family!!

Wow. This week started out rough… but ended so great!!!!

Just about every one of our appointments cancelled this week! Which I know happens a lot, but it’s hard when you’re only proselyting half the time AND all of your appointments fall through! One appointment that did hold was still heartbreaking, it was with M… and K…, the people we had invited to be baptized last week, so we go to our appointment and we’re eating pizza and talking and the whole time Sister Larsen and I could tell that something was off. So once we asked them if they had read the chapter from the Book of Mormon that we had given them to read they both told us that they had prayed about it and God answered them, and they felt like this isn’t something they should pursue anymore. They told us they didn’t want to talk about it but that they were happy we came over and told us if we are ever in the area that we can stop by and talk, but there is no way they are changing anything. It was so sad because last week they were so open and willing to learn!

The D… family also cancelled on us a bunch of times this week. They’ve been having a lot going on but we did get to see them! We rescheduled their temple trip and it is now set for September 26!!! I am so so so excited for them! But I actually can’t go to the temple with them anymore. It’s a bittersweet situation because N…, from my last area is going to the temple for endowments and President Anderson told me that I could go with him because Sister Johnstone’s companion at the time that N… was baptized is home now, so she needed someone to go with her! Since Sister Johnstone and I are both closest to the Palmyra temple, N… is going to come up here and go to that temple!! (: since I’m going to the temple with N… I can’t go with the D…’ but I know they will still have such a great time and Sister Larsen will be able to go and I think Sister Brown will go with her! I just really really want the D…’ to get to the temple! They need it! (:

The week did end very very well though!! On Sunday after our meetings and right before sacrament meeting started A… comes up to us and tells us that she saw us from the other side of the room and had to come and say hello! (I just love her!!) and she had brought her friend with her and wanted to introduce her to us!! So we introduce ourselves to her friend J…, who I actually met my first night in Susquehanna at our branch mission leaders house! Wow. J… is so cool! Sacrament meeting was AMAZING!! M… bore her testimony which was huge because she does not like talking in front of a lot of people, and we had over 80 people in sacrament meeting!! (Lots of visitors because of the Priesthood Restoration Site and the long weekend). AND A… also shared her testimony!! It was hers and M…’s first times!! It was seriously so good!! So Sister Larsen and I taught gospel principles and the only people there were A…, J…, three others, and Brother S… who is in the branch presidency. It was so great because we could really help J… understand what we were teaching and she was participating and asking questions, it was so great!!

At 4 on Sunday we went to the visitors center and A… and J… showed up!!! We gave them a tour and when we got to the Smith house we sat on my favorite benches and shared a scripture with both of them. J… told us that A… had given her a copy of the Book of Mormon a few days earlier and that they were going to start reading it together!! So awesome!! So we talked about the Book of Mormon and I just kept feeling prompted to ask her if we could meet with her. So we asked and she said she would love that! A… even suggested that we have the lessons at her house!! I am so excited!!!!! We took them both to the chapel and showed the Because He Lives video in there on the big screen and afterwards the spirit was so strong! J… talked about how she really liked church and she is excited to start meeting with us!!

On Monday (yesterday), we had exchanges! I went with Sister Francis all day!! I took her out finding with me and we went to a dinner appointment at the S….!! It was SO fun!! I love Sister Francis!!

This week I’ve studied a lot about diligence. Being diligent is so important! I love what it says in Preach My Gospel under diligence: “Diligence is steady, consistent, earnest, and energetic effort in doing the Lord’s work. The Lord expects you to work diligently–persistently and with great effort and care.” I’m trying to make this place better than I found it. Also in Preach My Gospel it states: “You are assigned to do the Lord’s work in a specific area. He wants you to watch over your area with love and great care. Your purpose is to help others come unto Him through baptism and confirmation. Do all you can to leave your area stronger than you found it. Meaningful goals and careful planning will help you accomplish what the Lord requires of you.” Doing all we can to help others shows the Lord our commitment to Him. I’m so grateful for everything I’m learning here!! I love God’s counsel to Oliver Cowdery in Doctrine and Covenants 6, specifically verse 23 and 36, “Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter? What greater witness can you have than from God?…. Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.” Oliver had prayed to know that all of this was true, he wanted to know that everything Joseph Smith was claiming to have had happened, really did happen. Later, when he came to Susquehanna County, a while after being a scribe, he questioned it all because he could not see the golden plates. When Joseph asked God to bring peace to Oliver’s mind God asks him this. Oliver had already received his answer that all of this was true, he had just lost sight of that or forgotten, God reminded him that he already knew this was all the work of the Lord. I think it’s so important to remember that. “A marvelous work is about to come forth,” it is coming forth now! I’m so grateful that I get to testify of truth to everyone I meet! It’s such a blessing to be here, my testimony is growing every day! I love this gospel, I love this work, I’m so grateful for my Savior and Brother, Jesus Christ. This is His work, and I’m so grateful I have this time to serve Him.

I love you to the moon and back!!

Love,

Sister Sammy Gomm (:

Craziest Week!! – Susquehanna #11

Hello friends and family!!

Wow. This week has been the craziest week! I know I say that every week, but I really mean it this time!! SO many of our appointments fell through, it was so sad!! But on Wednesday we went on exchanges with our sister training leaders!! Sister Johnstone and I went to Tunkhannock and Sister Brown stayed in Susquehanna with Sister Nielson! I LOVE Sister Johnstone!!! It was just like old times, my first transfer in the ppm (: it was seriously so fun to go on exchanges with my trainer!! We literally didn’t have a quiet moment. I just love her so much!!

This week was super stressful and everyone kept asking us things about the visitors center and about everything that’s going to be happening up here and we didn’t have any answers so I was super stressed out! Our district leader had been in Montrose for the afternoon so we called him to ask if he was still in Montrose and if he was if he could give me a blessing. So we call him and he’s all, “I’m actually in Great Bend right now, where can I meet you?” Ah I was seriously so grateful that he was so much closer and it wasn’t out of his way to come here! So we’re trying to think of somewhere he can meet us and Sister Brown is all, “Meet us at the Susquehanna river.” So we drive down to the river and Elder Moriera gave me a blessing at the river in the pouring rain. I love the priesthood. I love it so much, and I’m so grateful for it! I felt so peaceful after that and despite the fact that we still had no idea what was going on I knew that Heavenly Father had it all under control and I didn’t need to worry about it! (:

On Friday morning we went and did service at the restoration site and pulled weeds. It was actually so much fun to get to talk with everyone there (Sisters Simmons, Francis, and Elder and Sister Lingman (senior couple) were all there), We barely had any time to do our weekly planning because we had so many people to see! It was crazy.

On Sunday we went to church and during Sunday School we went to the Branch President’s office with the D…s’ and the Richardson’s (other senior couple) and worked on their family history for names to take to the temple for baptisms! Then during the third hour the D…s’ had their temple recommend interview and throughout all of relief society I am wondering about the D…s’ and how it’s going for them. Then finally, K… walks in and sits on the opposite end of the room from me so I mouth to her, “How did it go??” And in response she holds up her temple recommend!! I seriously almost started crying tears of joy!! I am SO excited for them!!!!!! We are still trying to figure the details out with the temple, because we were supposed to go this Saturday, but another surprise! The visitor’s center actually opens this Saturday!! So we don’t know if we can go to the temple with them or not…. We’re figuring out the details with the visitor’s center director. Needless to say, either way I am SO happy they got their temple recommends!! It has been a long time coming, and I cannot wait for them to go to the temple to do baptisms!!

So after church Sister Brown and I went to our appointments, and one of them fell through, so we were just going to do finding up in the area we were in.. But right after the appointment fell through the Assistants called us and asked us if we would be at our apartment at 3:30 because they had all of the other visitor center sisters with them. We look at the time and it’s already 3:10 and we were a half hour away so we get home at about 3:40 and wait for them all to show up. We sat on our landlord’s porch and talked to her as we waited… and waited… and waited! So 4:10 rolls around and we call the assistants and ask them where they are!! And they say, “Sisters, we are so sorry! We’ve been at the restoration site for the past 40 minutes, we’ll be to your apartment soon!” So we go back in our house to go to the bathroom and as we’re getting ready to go back out President Anderson calls us and tells us that I’m going to be moving out of the house I’m in and Sister Brown will be staying there with three other sisters who have been in the mission for about 5 weeks. And I am going to be training one of the GOLDENS who just got here from the mtc on Saturday!!!! YAY!! So about 15 minutes later, Sister Anderson, President, the Assistants, and 8 sister missionaries show up!!! We all go into our tiny house and drop off luggage and President comes up to me and says, “Sister Gomm, this is Sister Larsen, she just got here yesterday, and she is your new companion.” Oh my goodness. I LOVE Sister Larsen!!! She is the BEST!!!!!!!! She really is golden!! So we are part time visitor’s center missionaries and the rest of the time we will be proselyting!

So we all walk over to the Biesinger’s (senior couple) house and had dinner with all 12 visitor center sisters, 10 senior missionaries, President and Sister Anderson and the Assistants. Can you say too many missionaries in one house?? It was insane.

So we still don’t know what’s going on really, we just know that we are starting visitor’s center training tonight!!!!!!! I am so excited and I love being a missionary! I’m sorry this is so long and everywhere, but I hope you all have an amazing week!! I love you to the moon and back!!

Love,

Sister Gomm (:

Susquehanna #9

Hello friends and family!! First of all I just want to say congratulations to my baby sister on making the varsity soccer team!! Whoo! I know none of us are surprised, but I’m so proud of you! And congratulations to Tara R…!! My mom sent me a picture, you look absolutely stunning!!

Wow. What a rough week here in Susquehanna. Our new investigator that I talked about last week, F…, dropped us because she had some things come up and she doesn’t feel ready for the gospel. I am so sad about her! It’s crazy, everyone keeps dropping us. It’s devastating, really.

On a better note, the D… family is doing amazing!! They are so excited to go to the temple to do baptisms at the end of the month! I just love them so so so much! The S… family, (they were baptized about a year ago) decided that they wanted to do something that would help them progress in the gospel, and they asked us if we would have family home evening at their house so that we could help them know what to do for fhe. It was so fun and we talked about gratitude and I know that they all felt closer as a family afterwards and that they will continue to grow closer!

Sister Gomm & Sister Johnstone

Another plus, we had zone training in Scranton this week and I don’t think I mentioned this before, but Sister Johnstone is one of my sister training leaders! So I got to see her! Also Elder Beckstead who was in my mtc district is in my zone now, so that was exciting to see him!

We met this family that we taught the restoration to and they invited us to come back this upcoming Saturday! I am excited to really start teaching them and helping them! It’s crazy because our investigators keep dropping us, but we are still seeing miracles and meeting so many amazing people!! I just love Susquehanna so much!

Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Site - New church building and visitor's center.

Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Site – New church building and visitor’s center.

Other exciting news that I actually found out a couple of weeks ago but never mentioned, I am going to be in the visitor’s center up here!!! It will be finished in September, but we have training that will start at the end of this month! No one really knows what’s going on still, and we are just telling everyone about it and inviting them all to come! A lot of people in the area are super excited to go and see everything when it’s done!

Youth Conference stop at the Susquehanna River.

Youth Conference stop at the Susquehanna River.

On Saturday we had a devotional with a stake that came here for youth conference! Our branch president gave their stake president our phone number and he called us a few days before and asked if we could talk about what happened at the Susquehanna River and talk a little bit about personal revelation because that was the theme for their youth conference. So Saturday morning we headed down to the river a little bit early and talked to some people who were down there who had been at the Palmyra temple the day before (funny because the youth conference group had also been there the day before), and waited for the youth group to get there. Once they all started coming down they ran right to the river and were all yelling and skipping rocks and splashing in the river. The leaders gathered everyone around and Sister Brown and I started talking about everything that happened there and how Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were baptized and received the Aaronic Priesthood there. The spirit was so strong and I could tell as I testified that the spirit was touching the hearts of the youth there. Afterwards we headed up to the cemetery and showed them Elizabeth and Isaac Hale’s graves and Emma and Joseph’s child’s grave. As we were leaving the river everyone was so respectful and reverent. It was so cool to see the difference from when they had arrived to when they left. The spirit was so strong and I’m so glad I could meet so many amazing people!

I love the people here so much, and I love being a missionary and I love Susquehanna! Even though almost all of our appointments fell through this week and we are struggling to find people I’ve never been happier in my entire life! The gospel brings so much joy! I was reading in Luke chapter 1 this morning and I love verses 46 and 47. In this chapter Mary finds out that she will be the mother of the Son of God. From the moment she finds this out she doesn’t question it. She has so much faith and in verses 46 and 47 she says, “My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.” I want to be like that. I want everything I do to magnify the Lord. I want people who know me to know my Savior because of what I do and how I act. I love this gospel, I’m so grateful for it! Mary is such a wonderful example to me of faith and diligence. She submits to God’s will and I’m so grateful for her example.

I hope you all have a great week! I love you to the moon and back!!

Love,
Sister Sammy Gomm (:

What a Week – Downingtown #9

Hello friends and family!

Wow, what a week! So basically our area is struggling and we are just
trying to find people to teach every second of every day! At least,
that’s what we’re trying to do!

On Tuesday we had to go get our car fixed,
and the place we get it fixed at is not in our area, so we go,
assuming we’re going to be there for maybe an hour and a half at most
because the man we talked to on the phone said it would take an hour
at most. Well… He lied. We were there for FOUR HOURS. In the middle
of the day!! We could have been finding that whole time!! But since it
wasn’t in our area we couldn’t even go finding around where we were.
So frustrating!

finding

Sister Gomm & Sister Ipson out finding.

And that’s basically how the rest of the week went. Finding,
appointments that were cancelled last minute so we went finding, more
finding and uh… Finding! We went finding all day every day and no
one was interested. Seriously no one. It was so sad! But it’s okay, we
have faith that there will be people interested here someday!! (:

trainers

Sister Gomm and her two trainers – Sister Ipson & Sister Johnstone

We had zone conference on Friday with a bunch of different zones
around us and I got to see Sister Johnstone!!! Yay!! I also got to see
Elder Fernandes, Sister Smith, and Elder Crowther! (Mtc friends). Zone
conference was SO good!!! We watched a talk that was given at a new
mission president devotional, and it was so good! The talk was given
by President Uchtdorf and in it he talked about a letter called the
Ricciardi letter, that a lot of missionaries read because it’s so
uh..what’s the word…? motivational..uplifting… Anyways, It’s
seriously so good. It talks about being bold but not over-bearing.
Seriously, if you haven’t read it, read it! I don’t know where to find
it, I had gotten it from our sister training leaders airdropping it to
us, so that doesn’t really help you, but still! You should read it! So
President Uchtdorf references that talk and talks about being bold and
fearless. It was so good!

transfers

MTC friends – Elder Fernandes, Elder Crowther & Sister Smith

Anyways, after zone conference we went to a
members house for dinner/coloring Easter eggs! (As I’m sure you all
have already seen because I’m 110% positive my mom posted the picture
that the member sent to her on Facebook). But that was super fun!

So on Saturday we watched conference at J… and A…’s (the ones that
we go to at least once a week for dinner). And it was so good!
(Obviously). After that we went to a less active family’s house and
watched conference with them!!! So awesome! Then we were going to
watch the priesthood session, but a less active member called us and
asked if we could help her clean and put her stuff in boxes because
she’s going to be moving in the next few months. So we go to help her,
and we show up and she’s all, “Oh, I’m already done!” Okay… So we
just gave her a lesson instead and went home. Which took forever
because she lives in the Elder’s area, but it’s okay!

On Sunday we went over to the S…’s and watched both sessions of
conference and had brunch AND dinner. It was SO good and we ate so
much food!! Anyways. Our district leader had invited us to write down
how the spirit was making us feel while we watched conference. Along
with that I also had a bunch of questions I wanted answered. So I had
one question written on every page. Then a little section that said
“how do you feel?” I would stop about halfway through taking notes on
the page and answer the “how do you feel?” Question. My answers varied
from excited to humbled to peaceful, etc. the spirit was so strong
while watching it! And every single one of my questions was answered
on that exact page that had the specific question on it. One of my
questions was something along the lines of “how can I be a fearless
missionary?” About halfway through taking notes on that page Elder
Bednar started talking and talked about getting rid of fear. (From
Saturday). So cool. That happened for every single page I had
questions on, and I had just enough questions to answer all of them
without taking more pages of notes than I had questions for.

image4 (2)Today we went to Philly and I got part of the granite they are using
to build the Philly temple! Whoot! Also mine and Sister Johnstone’s
picture is hanging on the wall that they have of different people who
have gone and visited the temple site! Yay. We basically did all of
the same things I did the last time I was in philly because Sister
Ipson had never been! So that’s fun!

We didn’t get to meet with L… this week because she cancelled our
appointment, but we are just praying we can meet with her this week!
We did meet with C… and are hoping she will continue to progress!
Well, that’s basically all I have from last week! This week will be
full of lots of finding again!! Wish us luck! God bless!!
I love you to the moon and back!

Love Talking to God People – Downingtown #6

Hello family and friends!!!!

I feel like every week I say that this week was a crazy
week……..but………this week was a crazy week! So first of all,
my district is AMAZING. Sister Johnstone and I are the only sisters in
the district, but it is SO fun.

Oh, also sorry about last week, I still can’t figure out how to get
that email to send… Every time I try it just closes and doesn’t
send… And we haven’t been to computers for me to see if it will send
from there. I guess you’ll just never hear about that week. (Sorry
mom!)

So earlier this week Sister Johnstone and I were visiting a couple who
lives in our ward who they are actually moving to Lehi Utah! Whoot. We
just stopped by to give them a card and say goodbye and see if they
needed any help moving! After visiting with them we were walking back
to our car and saw a lady walking her dog. We stopped and talked to
her and we mention that we’re missionaries and she gasps loudly and
says, “Oh I love talking to God people!” Sister Johnstone and I try
not to laugh but end up scheduling an appointment with her for twenty
minutes later after she gets back from walking her dog. So twenty
minutes later we go to her house and have a great uh.. Discussion? We
talked a bit and she talked a lot about her church and we talked about
ours. After I said Joseph Smith’s account of the first vision the
spirit was SO strong. And she was definitely feeling the spirit. So
normally we would invite them to baptism right during that lesson, but
she just kept talking so much about her church and everything. So
about a two thirds of the way through the lesson Sister Johnstone
invites her to come to church and what does she say? “No.” Hahaha,
we’re like, oh man!! But she did say she wanted to meet with us next
week so we’re going tomorrow and hopefully we can get somewhere!
image3

“Love these peeps!!” Elder Wall, Sister Johnstone, [Sister Gomm] and Elder Owen

So transfer calls were this week. Friday night Sister Johnstone and I
were helping this less active member move and it’s getting pretty late
and we’re stressed because we’re going to be late and we don’t want
our district to be mad at us for not being able to hear about
transfers because we’re late so we hurry home, but we were still like
five minutes late! Super stressful. So we let our district leader know
we’re home and start planning for the next day. About twenty minutes
into planning he calls us. Neither of us move. We just sit there
staring at the phone for a minute. So we answer the phone and Elder
Owen (district leader) asks us how we’re doing and if we’re ready for
this transfer to be over and what-not. Then he asks what our guesses
are for everyone in our district. So Sister Johnstone looks at me, and
I start guessing. “Elder Clark is leaving.” Elder Owen: “Yes he is!”
Haha seriously dagger to the heart! So sad…..So I keep guessing,
“Elder Moriera is staying.” “Correct!” I go through everyone in our
district and I guessed every single one right. I get to Sister
Johnstone and I. I guess that I’m staying and Elder Owen says that’s
right. We talk for a second and Elder Owen asks what we think is
happening with Sister Johnstone. Sister Johnstone debates for a minute
and rationalizes and everything and eventually says, “I think I’m
staying.” So I sit there and without breathing (not really obviously,
but it feels like it), I say, “Sister Johnstone is leaving.” Elder
Owen: “Sister Johnstone, I’m sorry, you are being transferred.”
Silence. I can’t believe my trainer is being transferred halfway
through my training! I mean, I guessed from the first day that this
would happen, but hoping against hope I prayed that she would stay!
All of the ward members hoped she would too. But I know that Heavenly
Father needs her somewhere else or He needs my new companion here or
something….. Either way it’s still sad. So originally one person
from each companionship would be leaving except Elder Owen and Elder
Wall were being doubled out (both leaving the area). Elder Wall is
going home, and Elder Owen was being transferred. So sad, my mission
mom and dad were both going to be transferred!! BUT we found out on
Sunday that Elder Owen is staying!!!!! Apparently he got all of his
stuff packed up on Friday night and Saturday during lunch but Saturday
night he got a call letting him know he would be staying!!! I’m
seriously so grateful he is staying!

Honestly, neither Sister Johnstone nor I know why she is leaving
halfway through my training, we’re both so sad that we only got one
transfer together, and my mission president already emailed me pretty
much apologizing for transferring her, haha, but I know she will be a
wonderful companion and missionary in her new area!!! She’s seriously
the greatest and one of my best friends, I’m so so sad we won’t be
companions anymore, but I know she will be great wherever she gets
transferred to. So tomorrow I get a new companion! Whoot.

Seriously everyone, the gospel is so wonderful! Everyone here loves
the fact that gospel means “good news” they talk about that a lot. And
it truly is. The gospel is good news!!! We are followers and examples
of Jesus Christ. We are to follow in His footsteps and help others to
follow in His footsteps as well. The Atonement is amazing. Something
someone said at church this Sunday was that being resurrected is
something that is available and will happen to all of us, but how if
we use the Atonement and do as Christ did will determine where we go
after this life. Use the Atonement. Follow in Christ’s footsteps. Be
an example of Him. He loves you. Each and every single one of you. He
atoned and died for us. But He also lived for us. The church is
putting out another video this year (March 28, I believe), like the
Because of Him one, but it’s called Because He Lives. So get excited
and when it comes out show your friends! Share the good news!!!!!!!!

Okay well.. have a wonderful week!!
I love you to the moon and back!
